The government have recently adopted and passed private members bills which will introduce new rights for workers as follows:
Neonatal Care Act 2023, which gives 12 weeks paid leave to an employee if their new born baby is admitted to neonatal care;
The Protection from Redundancy (Pregnancy and Family) Leave Act 2023, which extends redundancy protection to cover pregnancy itself, rather than just maternity leave, and provides further protection for a period of time after return to work from maternity leave; and
The Carer’s Leave Act 2023, which provides a statutory right to unpaid leave for employees caring for a dependant with long-term care needs.
The commencement date for these provisions is yet to be finalised, and there will be secondary legislation which will provide details as to how the entitlements will operate in practice.
We will keep you updated as soon as this further information becomes available.
